- You can start your truck driving lessons before you do your learner’s questions
- If you already hold any class of truck licence (an HC, HR, LR, MC or MR licence) and are upgrading, you do not have to do a written knowledge test, just a practical driving test.
About the written knowledge test
- 10 question written test based on Heavy Vehicles
- Two (2) incorrect answers are permitted
- You can practice online, you will need to visit a TMR customer service centre to do the test
- There is no need to book to do this test, you can just walk in off the street and do it
- The cost is $27.75
- When you pass your Learner questions, it will be recorded on the TMR computer system (you will not get any paperwork)
- Heavy vehicle theory questions remain current for 5 years from the date they were undertaken
- If you fail, you will need to wait a further 24 hours until you are allowed to re-sit another test
- To study for this test you can either:
- Buy a copy of Your Keys to Driving in Queensland booklet (Learners Questions/Answers) from us or any newsagency. Or
- You can practice online here
- The Driving Examiners prefer that you have completed your learner questions before you undertake your driving test, however, you are permitted to do them after the practical driving test
- A heavy vehicle licence will not be issued until both the theory questions and the practical driving test are both recorded as a successful outcome on TMR’s computer system
Whilst you’re at the Department of Transport and Main Roads, take the time to check your driving history or tenure with a Customer Services Advisor. It’s important to make sure you are eligible to undertake the truck drivers licence you are applying for, particularly if you have incurred a recent disqualification for driving or you are worried about a medical condition. Due to the Privacy Act, we cannot do this for you.
