Paramedic Driver’s Licence Courses

Light Rigid Driving Lessons

  • 1+ hours
  • $130 per hour (GST-exempt) plus travel

Prerequisites:

  • To drive a manual truck, hold a current C manual licence.

Light Rigid Warm-Up Drive and Test

  • 1.5 hours
  • $295 (GST-exempt)
  • 40-minute warm-up drive + 20-minute check-in + 30-minute driving test

Types of Paramedic Driver’s Licences

Most ambulances in Queensland have automatic gearboxes. Getting an LR(B) may give you more options, but isn’t essential for your career.

LR(A)

You can only drive ambulances with automatic gearboxes.

LR(B)

You can only drive ambulances with automatic or synchromesh gearboxes.

How Getting Your Driver’s Licence Works

Step 1

Meet the Prerequisites

To apply for an LR licence, you must have held a C licence for at least one year.

Get the Right Skills

Talk to a driving school (like us) to find out what level of training you need to get your licence.

Some students with prior experience can refresh their skills and take their driving tests in as little as a day.

Others may need several lessons over a number of days.

Book Your Test

Once you’re confident about your driving skills, contact us by phone, email or form to book your driving test.

You can also book your test before your training if you’re doing one of our condensed training courses.

If you don’t already have a heavy vehicle licence, you’ll need to book a knowledge test through TMR too. You’ll need to get 8 out of 10 multiple-choice questions right to pass.

Take Your Test

On the day of your test, make sure you bring your current C licence. (If you have a temporary licence, you’ll need extra identification.)

Expect your LR driving test to take 25 to 30 minutes.

Drive any other vehicle between 4.5 and 8 tonnes GVM, including small trucks.

Requirements to Become a Paramedic

Paramedic positions with Queensland Health are competitive.

To improve your chances of getting a job, make sure you meet the base requirements before applying.

  • Be legally permitted to work in Australia.
  • Have more than 2 years of experience working as a paramedic/graduate paramedic.
  • Hold a paramedicine degree.
  • Be registered as a paramedic with Ahpra.
  • Hold a Queensland light rigid licence.
  • Meet the medical standards.
