What do I need to obtain my MC Licence
- You can undertake a MC Course at any time after obtaining a HR or HC Licence.
- However, The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will not issue you with an MC Licence until you have held your HR or HC for a continuous period of 12 months.
- There is no written knowledge test to undertake at TMR, the theory is done with us as part of your MC Course.
- You must successfully complete theory and practical assessments before a statement of attainment can be issued.
- You must lodge your application for your licence, in person, at any Department of Transport and Main Road Customer Service Centre with your Statement of Attainment together with you current drivers licence.
- If you currently have a Medical condition on your Licence, you need a medical certificate for the class of licence you are applying for.

Training will be done in what vehicle?
If you currently hold a HR or HC Unconditional Licence – your training and assessment can be done in any vehicle with an Automatic, Manual or Non-Synchromesh gearbox.
If you currently hold a HR or HC Condition A or Condition B Licence – during your training and assessment you must demonstrate competent operation of a vehicle with a Non-Synchromesh gearbox.
Lifting a Gearbox Restriction
For someone that is looking to remove the B Condition from their licence which will allow you to drive vehicles with a Road Ranger (Non-Synchromesh) gearbox, we have a number of pathways available depending on your experience and preference.
The Multi Combination course we offer really focuses on what is involved in being the driver of an MC vehicle itself i.e. – reading maps, work diaries, permits, skills involved in reversing 2 trailers, pre-checks, coupling and uncoupling trailers etc. Therefore, your MC training will be conducted in one of our Automated Manual Vehicles (AMT) which are industry relevant vehicles.
The cost of the course above does not include any extra training that may be needed to lift a gearbox restriction from your licence.
This training can be conducted by extending the HC portion of the HR to MC course and completing the HC training and assessment in our truck that is fitted with an 18 Speed Road Ranger Gearbox. This will be completed prior to commencing the MC training in one of the AMT MC vehicles.
The other option which is open to both HR to MC and HC to MC upgrades, is to undertake additional training in one of our HR Road Ranger vehicles. In consultation with you, we will determine when you are ready to undertake a driving assessment in the Road Ranger Vehicle.
Outcome
Licence outcome will be a MC Unconditional (Can drive any MC vehicle, Non-synchromesh, Synchromesh and Automatic Gearboxes)

More about our MC Courses
Course Information
- Courses run on a regular basis – 6 days per week (Sundays by arrangement).
- Day 1 starts with the Theory component of the course, delivered in a classroom environment, prior to any practical driving.
- There is a written theory assessment (closed book)
- Theory sessions normally commence at 8 am (can be as early as 6 am) and take approximately 3 hours
- Practical training commences on the same day, it is conducted on a one on one basis.
- If you are coming from your HR Licence, we will need to conduct an assessment with you during the course to ensure you are competent at the HC level.
- A Statement of Attainment will be issued after successful completion of the formal training (theory) and the practical training
- There is no additional cost for workbooks or training materials
- Please note that all students are different and some students may require additional training to achieve competency. We will discuss arrangements for additional training and assessment on a case by case basis.
