What Can I Drive With A LR Licence NSW?

In NSW, an LR vehicle refers to any motor vehicle that has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) ranging from over 4.5 tonnes to a maximum of 8 tonnes (with no axle limit) or any vehicle that can accommodate more than 12 passengers, including the driver, to a maximum of 8 tonnes.

Acquiring a light rigid licence is a relatively straightforward process that allows you to operate small trucks with a GVM of up to 8 tonnes, as well as mini-buses such as Toyota Commuters, Coasters, Mitsubishi Rosas, and most small motorhomes.

Please Note:  While an LR licence is required for driving a vehicle that carries more than 12 people, including the driver, it’s important to note that for testing purposes in NSW, you are not allowed to use a vehicle with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) under 4.5 tonnes, such as a Toyota Commuter.

Tips About This Licence

If you’re interested in obtaining a Light Rigid Licence in New South Wales, it’s important to prepare adequately. The practical driving test for this licence lasts approximately 30 minutes, which is notably shorter than the 60 to 70 minutes required for MR and HR licences.

The Light Rigid Licence is a popular option for motor home enthusiasts, mini-bus operators, and tradespeople who operate small trucks. These trucks are relatively easy to drive and use hydraulic brakes that are simpler to operate than air brakes.

From an employer’s perspective, an employee with a Light Rigid Licence can contribute to staff retention, making it a valuable addition to your skill set. Additionally, obtaining an LR Licence may also make you eligible for an MR or HR Licence, providing you with even greater flexibility.
