I recently had the pleasure of completing my HR crashbox license training and assessment with The Driving School, and I am incredibly grateful for the exceptional experience I had with both Jamie and Tyson.
Firstly, I would like to commend Jamie for his outstanding professionalism, patience, and expertise throughout the training process. […]
Additionally, I want to express my appreciation for Tyson’s fair and balanced assessment during the driving test. […]
I highly recommend The Driving School to anyone seeking quality training and assessment in driving trucks, as my experience was nothing short of exceptional.

Our MC licence course is delivered on behalf of Raise Training (RTO 91655), a government-accredited training organisation.
Our instructors are industry-experienced drivers who focus on the skills you need to get employed.
We’ve been helping Aussies learn to drive since 2007 – which is why 85% of our students pass on their first attempt.
Step 1
To apply for an HR licence, you must have held a C licence for at least 2 years.
Step 2
Talk to a driving school (like us) to find out what level of training you need to get your licence.
Some students with prior experience can refresh their skills and take their driving tests in as little as a day.
Others may need several lessons over a number of days.
Step 3
Once you’re confident about your driving skills, contact us by phone, email or form to book your driving test.
You can also book your test before your training if you’re doing one of our Licence in a Day courses.
If you don’t already have a heavy vehicle licence, you’ll need to book a knowledge test through TMR too. You’ll need to get 8 out of 10 multiple-choice questions right to pass.
Step 4
On the day of your test, make sure you bring your current C licence. (If you have a temporary licence, you’ll need extra identification.)
Expect your HR practical test to take 60 to 70 minutes.
You’ll learn the skills you need for your licence at 5 Nolan Drive, Morayfield (around 45 minutes’ drive from Maroochydore).
It’s a purpose-built training facility operated by Major Training, one of Australia’s leading machinery course providers.
I just did my HR driving test today and Peter was an absolute legend.
He was very patient with me while I was first trying out a HR truck, I did not feel judged at all, he made me feel comfortable and confident the entire time.
When I upgrade my licence I will be going back to them.
Peter showed professionalism but also individualism.

A HR licence is the best entry-level licence if you’re pursuing a career on the road.
Conduct multi-drop runs around hubs like Noosa and Maroochydore.
Transport freight from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Cairns as a linehaul driver.
A heavy rigid licence means you can drive construction vehicles like dump trucks, concrete agitators, and water carts.
Getting your HR licence qualifies you to drive most garbage trucks and skip haulage vehicles.
Transport passengers from Caloundra to Noose (and back again) by getting both your HR licence and a bus driver authorisation.
A heavy rigid licence means you can transport small truckloads of livestock and farming equipment.
Move loads around quarries and mines across Queensland with a heavy rigid licence.
Double-clutching is a gear-shifting technique you’ll need to know if you ever drive a non-synchromesh truck (like an Eaton with a Roadranger gearbox). A non-synchro gearbox doesn’t have a syncing mechanism, which means the driver needs to manually sync the engine’s RPMs with the drive shaft.
To double-clutch, half-compress the clutch, move the gear shifter to neutral, half-compress the clutch again, put it into gear. When you downshift, you’ll need to increase the revs while the clutch is in neutral to avoid grinding the gears. It’s the same principle as rev-matching in a manual car.
Most students need 3 to 5 lessons to pass their HR(A) driving test. Learning to drive on a manual gearbox normally requires 4 to 6 lessons – and an unconditional gearbox may need even more.
Everyone is different, though. The easiest way to see how many lessons you need is to book an introductory lesson with one of our drivers. They can then gauge your skillset and recommend a training plan.
Yes, you do. You can book and pay for your knowledge test at one of the Queensland government’s transport and motoring customer service centres. (There are 6 on the Sunshine Coast.)
To pass, you’ll need to get 8 out of 10 multiple choice questions right. As of August 2025, the test costs $28.70 (due on the day). Make sure you also bring proof of your identity.
The most cost-effective way to get an HR licence is through our condensed training course. You’ll learn all the skills you need in 11 hours of one-on-one instruction. In the last hour of the course, you’ll take your driving test. Our HR training course currently costs $2,410.
If you wanted to pay for individual lessons and then take the test separately, you can expect to pay around $1,300 to get an HR(A) licence. An HR(B) or unrestricted HR licence will probably cost you around $1,500. Keep in mind that the number of lessons you need to successfully pass will depend on your skill level and past experience.
If you can’t attend your course/lesson, please call or email to let us know. Keep in mind that, under our terms and conditions, you may not be entitled to a full refund if:
If you take your driving test in an automatic or manual truck, you’ll get an HR(B) licence. Because you’ve already proven you can operate a manual gearbox, you don’t need to do the test itself in a manual vehicle.
If you want an unrestricted HR licence, though, you’ll need to pass in a vehicle with a non-synchromesh gearbox. (Once you’ve passed, though, you can get your unrestricted HC or MC licence in an automatic vehicle. You don’t need to show you can drive a non-synchromesh gearbox again.)
If your current licence has a medical condition listed, TMR may ask you to get a new medical certificate (form F3712) when you apply for an MR licence.
To drive a rigid bus, you’ll need a heavy rigid licence and a general driver authorisation. A driver authorisation requires that you:
