Most buses in Queensland have automatic gearboxes. Getting a HR(B) or unconditional HR licence may give you more options, but isn’t essential for your career.
You can only drive buses with automatic gearboxes.
You can only drive buses with automatic or synchromesh gearboxes.
You can drive any bus, including those with non-synchromesh gearboxes.
I recently had the pleasure of completing my HR crashbox license training and assessment with The Driving School, and I am incredibly grateful for the exceptional experience I had with both Jamie and Tyson.
Firstly, I would like to commend Jamie for his outstanding professionalism, patience, and expertise throughout the training process. […]
Additionally, I want to express my appreciation for Tyson’s fair and balanced assessment during the driving test. […]
I highly recommend The Driving School to anyone seeking quality training and assessment in driving trucks, as my experience was nothing short of exceptional.

Our MC licence course is delivered on behalf of Raise Training (RTO 91655), a government-accredited training organisation.
Our instructors are industry-experienced drivers who focus on the skills you need to get employed.
We’ve been helping Aussies learn to drive since 2007 – which is why 85% of our students pass on their first attempt.
Step 1
To apply for a heavy rigid licence, you must have held a C licence for at least 2 years.
Step 2
Talk to a driving school (like us) to find out what level of training you need to get your licence.
Some students with prior experience can refresh their skills and take their driving tests in as little as a day.
Others may need several lessons over a number of days.
Step 3
Once you’re confident about your driving skills, contact us by phone, email or form to book your driving test.
You can also book your test before your training if you’re doing one of our Licence in a Day courses.
If you don’t already have a heavy vehicle licence, you’ll need to book a knowledge test through TMR too. You’ll need to get 8 out of 10 multiple-choice questions right to pass.
Step 4
On the day of your test, make sure you bring your current C licence. (If you have a temporary licence, you’ll need extra identification.)
Expect your HR practical test to take 60 to 70 minutes.
You’ll learn the skills you need for your bus licence at 5 Nolan Drive, Morayfield (around 45 minutes’ drive from Maroochydore).
It’s a purpose-built training facility operated by Major Training, one of Australia’s leading machinery course providers.
I just did my HR driving test today and Peter was an absolute legend.
He was very patient with me while I was first trying out a HR truck, I did not feel judged at all, he made me feel comfortable and confident the entire time.
When I upgrade my licence I will be going back to them.
Peter showed professionalism but also individualism.

The easiest way to get a heavy rigid bus licence is through our condensed training course. You’ll learn all the skills you need in 11 hours of one-on-one instruction. In the last hour of the course, you’ll take your driving test.
You’ll also need driver authorisation. That’s a separate type of licence that lets you transport passengers. You can apply for your authorisation here.
There’s no ‘bus licence’ class. Buses are heavy vehicles, which means you’ll need to get either a medium rigid or heavy rigid vehicle licence to drive one. A medium rigid licence lets you drive a bus of any weight with up to 2 axles. A heavy rigid licence lets you drive any bus, including articulated buses.
Yes, you can. In fact, you need a heavy vehicle licence to drive a bus. Most council buses on the Sunshine Coast require heavy rigid (HR) licences, but some smaller buses can be driven on medium rigid (MR) licences.
Keep in mind that you’ll also need driver authorisation. That’s a separate type of licence that lets you transport passengers. Different bus-driving roles need different kinds of authorisation.
The most cost-effective way to get a heavy rigid bus licence is through our condensed training course. You’ll learn all the skills you need in 11 hours of one-on-one instruction. In the last hour of the course, you’ll take your driving test. Our HR training course currently costs $2,410.
If you wanted to pay for individual lessons and then take the test separately, you can expect to pay around $1,300 to get an HR(A) licence. An HR(B) licence will probably cost you around $1,500, while an unrestricted HR licence will cost around $2,500. Keep in mind that the number of lessons you need to successfully pass will depend on your skill level and past experience.
If you can’t attend your course/lesson, please call or email to let us know. Keep in mind that, under our terms and conditions, you may not be entitled to a full refund if:
