At our purpose-built training facility on the Gold Coast, we provide training and assessment for every type of heavy vehicle on the road – including the MR Drivers Licence.
We offer a number of training pathways including individual lessons and a Licence in a Day option. In some cases, we can come to your place of business for group training.
Located 50 minutes from Brisbane CBD and 23 minutes from downtown Surfers Paradise, our Arundel location is accessible from most south-east Queensland and northern NSW areas.
What can I drive with a MR driving licence?
A MR Licence covers you to drive any vehicle with 2 axles (1 steer and 1 drive). This includes motorhomes, buses, certain types of trucks, tow trucks and local freight vehicles.
Here are some vehicles you are permitted to drive:
- A class LR vehicle
- A bus or truck (including a prime mover or a mobile crane) over 8t GVM with a maximum of 2 axles
- A Medium Rigid (MR class) motor vehicle towing one trailer (not a semi-trailer) that has a GVM not exceeding 9 tonnes, and no other type of trailer.
This class of licence offers good job opportunities for:
- local freight deliveries
- removalists
- car carriers
- coaches and buses
If you are eligible for your MR Licence and you have held your car licence or higher for more than 2 years, you might want to consider training for your HR Licence instead. This licence will open up an even wider range of job opportunities.

What do I need to obtain my MR Licence
- You must have held a Car Licence (or higher) provisional, probationary or open for at least 12 months

- If you currently hold a LR Licence, a written knowledge test is not required.
- If you currently have a Medical condition on your Licence, you need a medical certificate for the class of licence you are applying for
- If you are going to use your MR Licence to drive a bus, you may also need to obtain your driver’s authorization from TMR
If you have held your Car Licence or higher for over 2 years, you may also be eligible for your HR Licence

Although these trucks do exist in the industry, they are very rare.
- At the present time, we have no MR non-synchromesh vehicle in our fleet.
- However, we do have a HR non-synchromesh vehicle in our fleet.
- Alternatively, we can train you in your own vehicle (must be over 8 tonne GVM with 2 axles and meet TMR’s requirements)
If you have held your Car Licence or higher for over 2 years, you may also be eligible for your HR Licence

The MR Condition B Licence is a good option if this licence is all that you need, that is fine. However, if you are looking for work and are eligible to sit for your HR Condition B at this time, we would recommend this pathway from the outset. The requirements of the practical driving test are almost identical and there are far more jobs on offer for a HR driver than an MR driver. The future benefits gained far outweigh the additional cost involved.
If you have held your Car Licence or higher for over 2 years, you may also be eligible for your HR Licence

A MR Condition A Licence is very restrictive in terms of job opportunities, however perhaps your employer has only automatic trucks in their fleet.
- You may be purchasing your own vehicle / motor home
- You may have a disability that prevents you from driving a manual vehicle
If you have held your Car Licence or higher for over 2 years, you may also be eligible for your HR Licence

Licence in a Day is an option that is available to you, if you are busy working and struggle to find the time to do the lessons. You can take a day off work and focus on the job in hand.
This is not our preferred method of training but it can be convenient.
With the option of Saturday testing, you may not even have to take a day off work
Breakdown of Cost:
Price includes:
- 1 hour Assessment Lesson
- 4 hours of training (breaks as required) plus your actual practical driving test (approx. 1 hour).
- Our vehicle to use during these allotted times
Price does not include:
Other associated costs:
- Mid-week Practical Driving Test Booking Fee $63.70 incl GST
- Saturday Practical Driving Test Booking Fee $146.00 incl GST
- Written knowledge Test (if required) $24.75
Outline of Process
- It is recommended that an assessment lesson is done 7-10 days prior to your Licence in a Day (included within the price). This is necessary to:-
- a) Assess your current driving ability and make you aware of any “habits” you need to rectify before the day of your practical driving test.
- b) To ensure you feel comfortable in the vehicle you are going to be driving
- c) To ensure that the Licence outcome you are going to achieve is what you actually need.
- We book your driving test and the rest of the training you need into our diary at a time convenient to you
- Return on the scheduled day (we will remind you) to finalise all of your training and undertake your practical driving test with a Driving Examiner from the TMR
Licence in a Day – no prior Assessment Lesson
It is possible to undertake all your training on the same day, combining the assessment lesson, the practical training and the driving test altogether.
However, this is at your own risk and it is not our preferred method – it is a lot of money to invest in a day course if this is not a suitable pathway for you to get your MR Licence. An assessment lesson gives you an opportunity to see what is actually involved and it gives your trainer the chance to verify that this training pathway is the best way of achieving a first time successful outcome for you.
No driving school can guarantee an outcome for you and it is unethical to advertise such. However, we will try our best!
Booking Process
To book the Licence in a Day you can complete the online enquiry form or call our office on 07 55378101 or 0406 539613. Our office staff will then organise your training schedule with you.
To confirm the booking, we will need your Driving Licence number and you will need to pay the practical driving test booking fee.
Please see full details of our payment terms and conditions
If you have held your Car Licence or higher for over 2 years, you may also be eligible for your HR Licence
Tips about this Licence
If you already hold a manual licence, regardless of whether you take your lessons and test in the MR with an automatic or synchromesh gearbox, you will end up with a MR Condition B Licence (can drive Synchromesh and Automatic gearboxes).
You have already previously demonstrated during a past driving test that you can use a vehicle with a synchromesh gearbox and for test purposes you do not have to do it again.
If you currently hold only an automatic licence and do your practical driving test in an automatic truck you will end up with an automatic truck licence (MR Condition A). However, you can do another practical driving test, at a later date, in any vehicle with a manual gearbox (Car, LR, MR etc) to lift the gearbox restriction off your Licence thus changing the status of your licence from automatic to manual.
If eligible, you should consider doing your HR Licence , it is a better class and gives better employment prospects. It will not cost a great deal more.
A HR with a B condition is not as difficult or expensive to obtain as the HR open (road ranger) licence as you do not need to master the double clutching technique.
